This week’s EastEnders has seen Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall)
removed from Kat Slater’s (Jessie Wallace) care after assaulting her and his younger brothers.
Tommy’s violence was discovered by Jean Slater (Gillian Wright),
who called social services in a bid to put a stop to it.
When social services arrived at the family home, Kat defended Tommy, despite his violence towards her.
Now, fans are wondering if this is set to link back to a previous storyline, which was one of EastEnders’ most controversial ever.
Taking to Twitter/X, EastEnders fan Alessia questioned whether this storyline may end up linking back to the infamous baby swap storyline.
‘I wonder if this Tommy storyline is going to link back to the baby swap?’ She questioned. ‘With how Kat is wanting to overprotect Tommy so much, even though she knows he’s out of control.’
Other EastEnders fans were quick to agree, with Angel suggesting ‘it would be good’ if the two stories were linked.
What was the baby swap storyline?
In 2010, Kat fell pregnant around the same time as Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack), and they both gave birth on the same day.
However, tragedy struck for Ronnie when her son, James, died of sudden infant death syndrome.
After hearing baby Tommy cry, she made her way into the Queen Vic and swapped the babies.
Several months later, Ronnie finally came clean about what she’d done, and gave baby Tommy back to Kat and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie).
She was then sent to prison for her crime.
The storyline was hugely controversial and garnered a whopping 13,400 complaints to the BBC and Ofcom from horrified fans.
The backlash was so strong that the storyline actually ended up being cut shorter than was originally intended.
All of that said, Ofcom eventually cleared the soap, explaining that while the scenes on their own could be perceived as offensive, they were within the boundaries in the wider context of a show known for tackling tough issues.
‘I remember back when it happened and Kat got Tommy back, she was worried that the time apart would lead to problems in their relationship,’ they added.
‘I hadn’t thought of that but it does make sense,’ fellow fan Amanda added.
Are these fans onto something? Could EastEnders be set to reference their most controversial storyline of all time?
